CLEMENT SORDET, the French golfer, expressed his sorrow following the attack in Nice on Thursday night that killed at least 84 people and hoped his countrymen and women would rally round to support each other as a nation comes to term with yet another act of terrorism on French soil.

Sordet had paid his own personal tribute by writing “Pray for Nice” on his cap ahead of his second round at the Open championship in Troon. The 23 year-old, who is based in the city, revealed his girlfriend’s family were enjoying a Bastille Day party when the incident took place but that all of them were safe and well.

He said: “I woke up at four in the morning because I had an early tee time and I knew straight away. I got a text and some people were asking if we were safe but we were here.

“I tried not to think about it but that's why I had this written on my hat. I live in Nice and it happened maybe 500 metres from where I live. It's close to the sea, really close to the beach. My girlfriend is from Nice and has family there.

“It was a big party last night because it was the 14th of July so we had a bunch of friends and it was my girlfriend's mum there. They're safe now, so everything's okay but I feel really bad for all of the other guys. I'm really proud to be French, and I think we all need to support each other. I will say my prayers.”
