With the exception of a few painful household incidents involving shelving units and Allen Keys, the DIY approach can often bring benefits. It certainly seems to have worked for Marc Warren here at the Dunhill Links.

A purposeful six-under 66 at the Old Course, which equalled the best score on day two of the championship, hoisted the Scot up into the top-10 as he tucked himself into a share of sixth on a six-under 138.

It’s been a frustrating season for Warren on the main circuit. His best finish has been 11th in the Czech Masters and the general inconsistency has left the three-time tour winner down in 125th place on the order of merit and scrambling to preserve his tour card. “I’ve been searching the whole season for something but instead of relying on someone else I just went back to practising myself,” he said. “I just got a video of my swing and from that I have a better understanding of what I’m doing.”

Warren began his campaign this week with three straight bogeys in round one at Kingsbarns but managed to salvage a level-par round on a course which simply doesn’t suit his eye. The Old Course does, though, and six birdies over his first 12 holes had him barging up the standings.

“My practice for this week had been really, really good and I was looking forward to it so to start the other day the way I did was pretty disappointing,” added Warren. “Over the years that’s the course where I’ve struggled. Other players are shooting the lights out and I seem to just turn in a level-par round. It’s funny, even Scott Jamieson sent me a text on Thursday night and said ‘I see you had your usual score at Kingsbarns today’.”

Andrew McArthur was the next best placed Scot on 140 after a 70 on the Old Course with Richie Ramsay a stroke further back after a 71 at Kingsbarns. Jamieson, sitting sixth after day one, toppled backwards with a 75 at St Andrews for an aggregate of 142.

Meanwhile, Tiger Woods has officially entered next week's Safeway Open and will make his first PGA Tour start since August 2015.

Following a limber up in his own Tiger Woods Invitational on Monday, Woods will head to Napa for the Safeway event to mark his competitive return following a series of back problems and surgery.
