Jimmy Gunn, the Dornoch exile, secured the largest cheque of his professional career with a second place finish on the Web.com Tour in the Bahamas but it was a case of what might have been for the Arizona-based Scot.

The 36-year-old had been leading after 36-holes of the weather-disrupted Bahamas Great Abaco Classic on the US scene’s second-tier circuit and was still leading going into the final day with 28 holes ahead of him. But he played the final 10 holes of his third round on Wednesday morning in four-over to drop two shots off the lead entering the final round. Gunn was then one-over through three holes but fought back with birdies at the fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth holes to keep himself in the hunt before eventual winner, Andrew Landry, eased away and claimed a three shot win.

Gunn, who finished with a 13-under aggregate, picked up a cheque for $64,800 which eclipsed the $62,000 he earned at the 2015 US Open.

“I like playing in the wind but as soon as it went calm, I couldn’t play again,” Gunn said of a week that had been ravaged by strong gusts. “It was a good week. Just five bad holes killed me. You can’t do that when the wind goes down.”
