RUSSELL KNOX joked he may have to start throwing his clubs around at the Open this week as he looks to reverse his recent run of bad form. Knox, the only Scottish player in the world top 50, has missed the cut in six of his last 10 events going back to the Masters but hopes his luck will finally turn at Royal Birkdale.

Despite his poor fortune, the 32 year-old remains one of the calmest figures in the game but he laughed that maybe it was time for him to start losing his temper a bit more.

He said: “It’s hard to stay calm some times. I mean, every golfer finds that hard. In the past I’ve had a real temper but over the past couple of years I’ve worked to remain calmer.

“But I’m still mad inside, especially missing cuts. When that happens, you want to snap every club in your bag! But that’s not going to help. I try to stay even. But maybe I need to show more emotion. Maybe I’ll have a good club throw this week! Being calm is not really working, so maybe I’ll be more fiery.

“But there is nothing wrong with my game. I just need to find a way to score better.”
