Of the SGU's 580 member clubs, some 89% have returned figures for adult male membership in 2011 which reveal an overall drop of 2% compared to 1.4% the previous year.
A recent survey suggested that, in the United Kingdom and Ireland as a whole, clubs had suffered a net loss of 42,700 members during 2011. In Scotland, 7% of the country's 176,000 male members, some 12,320, have been lost since the mid-2000s.
