The awards just kept on coming for Luke Donald on the eve of the BMW PGA title defence at Wentworth.

Donald was awarded honorary life membership of the European Tour the morning after picking up the Harry Vardon Trophy for topping last season's money list, the European Golfer of the Year crown voted for by writers and broadcasters and the Players' Player of the Year trophy – with an amazing 95% of the vote.

"This is special," said the world No.2 on receiving his membership badge from George O'Grady, the Tour's chief executive.

He becomes the 41st honorary life member a year after Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, Charl Schwartzel and Lee Westwood joined the club but he stopped short of declaring himself the best player in the world when asked the question yesterday.

"I don't really think in terms like that," he said. "I think my focus is to try and always continue to improve and be a better golfer. In terms of who is the best, that's a hard thing to discuss. Certainly, I've been one of the most consistent players over the last couple of years."

Paul Casey gave himself a fitness test at Wentworth yesterday – and ended up a winner. Casey's team had the best score in the morning pro-am on the eve of the BMW PGA Championship.

The former world No.3 has pulled out of tournaments the last two weeks after further problems with the shoulder he dislocated snowboarding in Colorado on Christmas Eve.
