Stephen Gallacher has withdrawn from the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth with a niggling wrist injury.

The 40-year-old Scot, who has had two top-five finishes in the European Tour's flagship event in the last five years, had a cortisone injection in his left wrist on the eve of the championship in the hope that it would ease an untimely bout of tendonitis.

Gallacher, who also had to pull out of the pre-tournament Pro-Am on Wednesday, had rated his chances of playing as "90-10" before the injection but hoped things would improve overnight. Unfortunately for the Ryder Cup player, it did not.

Gallacher had been due to partner European Ryder Cup team-mate Lee Westwood and Tommy Fleetwood in today's opening round.

He was replaced by 32-year-old Englishman Robert Dinwiddie, a past winner of the Scottish Open Strokeplay championship during his time in the amateur ranks.
