In-form Els eyes third Scottish Open title

Ernie Els will look to feed off the confidence generated by his return to form when he bids for a record-equalling third Scottish Open title at Castle Stuart next month, writes Kevin Ferrie.

The South African, whose entry was announced yesterday, has had some of the greatest days of his career in Scotland, winning the Open Championship at Muirfield in 2002 on top of his successes at Loch Lomond in 2000 and 2003.

However, it is the way he has performed more recently that means he will be among the most fancied contenders, after top-10 finishes at both the US Open and the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in recent weeks."Everyone who knows me knows I love playing in Scotland and I am excited about returning to Castle Stuart," Els said. "I thoroughly enjoyed the lay-out of the course last year and I played pretty well."The absences of Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood, who played last year, has generated some disappointment, organisers can still claim this as one of Europe's leading events, with 19 of the world's top 60 taking part. Peter Adams, the tournament director, said: "The Irish Open is also providing links golf three weeks before The Open and some players are only playing one event in that time. I think that might have had a small effect but our field is still very strong,"
