Scott McCarron has apologised to world No.2 Phil Mickelson for accusing him of cheating by using a 20-year-old wedge that has escaped new legislation limiting the volume and sharpness of edges of the grooves on irons.
There are also indications that the offending Ping Eye 2 clubs may eventually be outlawed on the top tours although it could take more than three months to find an agreeable way of doing it. That means they could still be legal for the Masters in nine weeks’ time.
