Now Wentworth offers the threat of a watery grave: birdies will no longer be a gimme on one of golf’s most famous holes
The final green on Wentworth’s West course is one of the best known in the world, the scene of dramas galore in the World Matchplay Championship that was played there between 1964 and 2007 and the PGA Championship that has been staged there continuously since 1984.
Now you simply wouldn’t recognise it. When I visited Wentworth recently I needed a double-take to make sure I was in the right place because there is now a large burn fronting the green which itself has been raised and surrounded by cavernous bunkers.
