Sick of seeing Scotland's golfers plundering South African silverware, Johannesburg's Haydn Porteous launched his one-man revenge mission at Barassie yesterday during the first round of the Carrick Neill Scottish Open Strokeplay Championship.

The 17-year-old illuminated a superbly assembled eight-under-par 65 with a pair of eagles at the first and 16th as he finished two shots clear of Australia's Brett Drewitt and the French duo Clement Berardo and Adrien Monnier.

The Rainbow Nation has been a happy hunting ground for the Scots over the past couple of years. Michael Stewart and Brian Soutar notched successive South African Open wins while the national team beat their hosts in a Test match for the Leopard Trophy in February. These profitable raids by the Tartan Army have not gone down well with Porteous though, and the current South African Strokeplay champion is determined to strike his own counterblow on Scottish turf."It's still doing my head in," he said in reference to the recent success enjoyed by the Scots in his native land. "So there's a bit of a feeling of revenge here."Porteous certainly knows how to post a low score in Scotland. He shot two 65s en route to a fourth place finish in the 2010 Scottish Open Under-16 Championship at Auchterarder during his last visit here. Sandwiched in between, however, was an 81. "It was windy that day," he recalled. "I was a bit worried about the weather but it's been better than I expected."Drewitt thrust himself into contention with a fine 67 that burst into life on the closing stretch. He holed a 45-footer for a birdie at 14 and made further gains at 15, 16 and 18. Berardo covered his last 11 holes in seven-under in his 67 while the French connection was strengthened late in the day when Monnier pieced together a six-birdie card.Ross Bell, Charlie Macneal and Greig Marchbank added a Scottish flavour to an international leaderboard with rounds of 68.
