Ramsay hamstrung in Castle Stuart build-up

A hamstring injury is threatening Richie Ramsay's preparations for the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart and the Open at Royal Lytham.

Ramsay believes the injury was sustained during the Irish Open last week, where finished 16th, but after a pro-am event before this week's French Open in Versailles, the Scot realised the extent of the problem. He has advised officials at the 2018 Ryder Cup venue that he may be forced to withdraw if his condition does not improve.

"I just can't swing a club as the pain is so intense," he said. "The only thing I can practice is my chipping and putting. And the timing could not be worse with all my plans."I played in the pro-am here on Tuesday and felt nothing and I hit the ball great. We actually won the pro-am, which was great. I hit every fairway and I only missed two greens. It was some of the best I have played, but I woke up this morning in pain."Ramsay believes he can trace the injury back to last week's Irish Open at Royal Portrush."I remember last week in Ireland I had to play one awkward shot from the side of a slope in the rough where I had to stretch my legs wide and put a lot of weight on my right leg," he said."It felt a bit sore straight after that, but it did not give me any problems during the pro-am, so I don't know what's caused it."Ramsay is fortunate that he does not have to tee up until 12.30pm local time, allowing all morning for intensive treatment on his leg.Ramsay, the world No.98, needs to defend his position to secure a top-100 spot and be sure of a place at the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island next month.His fellow Scot Martin Laird has had to withdraw from the French Open due to the death of his grandfather.However, the North Carolina-based Scot will travel to Castle Stuart next for the Scottish Open before teeing up at the Open.
