McDougall, who lives just 50 yards from the course in Elderslie, did it the hard way, first removing the leading qualifier, Romain Langasque from Cannes, and then the Italian Renato Paratore, considered by the former Walker Cup captain Peter McEvoy to be one of Europe's most talented youngsters.
