David Patrick's diary of events for next week was full of the usual day-to-day duties of a PGA professional at this time of the year.

There's the Ben Shotgun Pro-Am at Cardross on the Wednesday and an 18-holer at Lochwinnoch on Friday. There's also plenty of coaching appointments to fulfil in between. Now, though, Patrick is hastily re-jigging his schedule after he was awarded a place at Wentworth for the BMW PGA Championship.

Instead of battling it out with the Tartan Tour regulars and honing the swings of his burgeoning client base, the 37-year-old from Edinburgh will be going head-to-head with the likes of Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood in the European Tour's flagship event.Patrick, who will be making his debut in the lucrative €4.5m showpiece, was informed of his late call-up yesterday after Derbyshire stalwart Paul Wesselingh, one of the UK's leading PGA campaigners down the years, withdrew to take up an invitation to the US PGA Senior Championship."I was put on stand-by on Monday night but only had it confirmed at lunchtime on Wednesday," said the former Walker Cup player, who was originally pipped to a Wentworth place in the PGA Play-Offs at the end of last year. "It's obviously exciting to have the opportunity to play in such a prestigious tournament that you have watched on television over many years."Having flirted with the European Tour and notched a win on the second-tier Challenge Tour during his days as a full-time competitor, Patrick has had some moments to savour and the Scot is now relishing the prospect of tackling Wentworth's famous West course."Although I have never played the course before, you think you know what you should be doing off most of the tees, especially the back nine where you know where the trouble is," added Patrick, who was third on last season's Tartan Tour order of merit. "In that sense, I think I know what to expect."My main focus these days is coaching, so my game is what it is. I'll try and clear the diary a bit in the next few days and cram in some extra practice but as long as I can play my own game and trust in myself, then I'll be happy."How will he warm up for one of the biggest events of his career? By playing in this weekend's Buchanan Castle Pro-Am of course.
