The best part of it, however, was not out on the course, but in the recorder's hut afterwards, when Phil Hinton, the Shropshire club pro who had been paired with Watson, turned to the 62-year-old legend and offered his own marvellously dry assessment. "You did all right once you got over the nerves of playing with me," Hinton said.
