September 2008 Rangers’ Lee McCulloch informs Burley he is retiring after the 1-0 defeat to Macedonia.

Burley records his first win at the fifth attempt – 2-1 in Iceland - with Kirk Broadfoot scoring after Burley labelled him “limited”.

October 2008 Scotland are held to a goalless draw by Norway, Chris Iwelumo missing an open goal. Kris Boyd announces he will not play while Burley is in charge, after just 28 minutes of action.

March 2009 Burley wakes up to a crisis following the 3-0 defeat in Holland with Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor leading a lengthy drinking session. More bad news awaits as photographs show Ferguson and McGregor making obscene gestures while sitting on the Hampden bench. The Rangers pair are banned from the team.
