Spurs right back Alan Hutton and Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher withdrew before George Burley’s squad jetted out to the Far East.

Hutton has a knee injury while Fletcher has an ankle strain.

They joined Scott Brown, Shaun Maloney, Steven Naismtih, Scott Robertson, Kevin Thomson, Garry O’Connor, Danny Fox and Robert Snodgrass in pulling out.

Burley today called up former Rangers and Motherwell midfielder Stephen Hughes, now at Norwich, and ex-Inverness Caley Thistle player Don Cowie, who is playing at Watford.

The national boss, already under fire after failing to lead his country into a play-off for the World Cup, called up Lee Wallace of Hearts and Lee Miller of Aberdeen on Monday.

And yesterday he surprised many when he named Dundee United winger Craig Conway among his travelling party.

However, there were only 10 outfield players available to train with Scotland squad at the Strathclyde Homes Stadium in Dumbarton yesterday.

And many members of the Tartan Army are now questioning the wisdom of holding a friendly match so far away at the beginning of such a long hard season.

Typically, Burley was putting a brave face on the debacle - he feels the match will now give him the opportunity to blood several promising young players.

He stated: “This is an opportunity to go to a different continent and have a big challenge. It’s going to give a number of players their debut. A number will get international experience. Unfortunately, we’ve had injuries. There were three before Saturday.

“I have been very pleased with the last couple of games. We’re trying to introduce some new players. This is going to give me the opportunity to do that.

“It’s good to introduce some fresh blood, players who maybe haven’t played international football, but are doing well for their clubs. Lets see how they cope.”
