Fox-Pitt would be riding high if team-mate lit flame at Games

William Fox-Pitt has little doubt who should be asked to light the Olympic flame in London later this month.

"Personally, I think it should be Mary King," said the world No.1, who will lead the British bid for medals at Greenwich Park.

While Fox-Pitt has been preparing for his fourth Games, team-mate King will go two better than that. Not only will she equal javelin thrower Tessa Sanderson's Olympic appearance record for a British athlete when she competes for a sixth time, at 51, King is also the oldest home female competitor in London.

Fox-Pitt feels that to bestow the greatest symbolic act of London 2012 on King would be a fitting tribute. "She is an amazing Olympic athlete," he said. "This will be her sixth Games, which is incredible."However, King has her sights set on a more tangible tribute to her talents: a gold medal. "There is one medal I need to complete the set, and wouldn't it be amazing to do that in London? We will see," she said. "We are in with a chance."
