Alberto Contador will be crowned Tour winner today after his “mistake” left his Luxemburgian rival chasing 39 seconds

For a moment yesterday, as he sped along the banks of the Garonne river, Andy Schleck could smell victory.

But then the most enduring image from this year’s Tour de France, that of Alberto Contador riding clear of the Luxemburger as he stood on a French mountainside struggling to fix his bike, came back to haunt him.
