Three Scots have been named in the European side to take on the United States in Manchester next month, writes Hailey Milne.

Hannah Miley, Caitlin McClatchey and Robbie Renwick will compete alongside world and Olympic medallists Rebecca Adlington and Jo Jackson plus Italy’s Federica Pellegrini, the world record holder at 200m and 400m freestyle.

The other leading Britons set to compete are world champions and world record holders Gemma Spofforth and Liam Tancock, as well as world 100m freestyle runner-up Fran Halsall. Olympic open water runner-up David Davies is also in the team.

Notable absentees, though, are Paul Biedermann, who took Michael Phelps’ world title in Italy in the summer, and Britta Steffen, the double sprint freestyle world champion and winner ahead of Halsall over two lengths at the world championships.

In all, the E-Stars comprises 14 British,
14 Italian and eight German swimmers, who will take on a 36-strong American team that is likely to include Phelps on December 18-19.

What is unclear as yet is what the swimmers will be wearing as the clock ticks down on the supersuits, which have helped set more than 230 world records since their introduction in February 2008 but will become illegal on January 1 next year.

Phelps has already said he will be racing in the 2010 textile suit he wore in the recent World Cup, during which the performance-enhancing effects of the likes of the Arena X-Glide were clear as the multiple Olympic champion failed to reach finals on a number of occasions.
