The Italian denied the Scot, already 100 metres champion, an Olympic sprint double in 1980 when he pipped him in the 200m final in Moscow, pictured, winning in 20.19 seconds. Mennea also held the world record for 17 years. Over a four-year period, the two had a series of close races with never more than 0.02 seconds between the muscular Scot and the wiry Italian.
