UNBEATEN Gary Cornish will look to take a step closer to his first professional title when he makes his 21st appearance at the Bellahouston Leisure Centre on Saturday, May 23.

The 28 year-old destroyed Croatian Marino Goles in just 59 seconds of his last outing, at the Paisley Lagoon Centre in February, but will now feature in an eliminator for the Commonwealth heavyweight title or in a challenge for the IBO intercontinental heavyweight championship just a few miles along the M8.

Cornish will be joint top of the bill alongside Paisley middleweight Kris Carslaw who will be given a final run-out before he challenges British champion Liam Smith in what will be Carslaw's second attempt to win a Lonsdale belt.

Manager Tommy Gilmour has no doubt that the Bellahouston show will represent a major moment for both his charges.

"In respect of Gary we want him to start making an impression on the European and world rankings and what we have here is an opportunity for him, whether it is a Commonwealth eliminator or an IBO intercontinental challenge, to do just that," said Gilmour.

He continued: "Gary was so impressive against Goles. The punch that stopped the fight was textbook and it was a victory that no one really expected to happen as quickly and spectacularly as it did, but it has meant the time is right for Gary to move up in class and the Bellahouston show will be that opportunity.

"With regard to Kris we will probably have him in against European opposition in what will be a very important fight for him to build into his British title challenge with Liam Smith. Again we are looking to develop his European ranking while we are at it. So for both boxers there is a lot on the line."

The joint Chris Gilmour and Iain Wilson promotion also features former Commonwealth light-welterweight title challenger Eddie Doyle, Jordan McCorry and hard-hitting Scottish light-middleweight champion Mike Towell of Dundee.

Unbeaten prospects Uddingston's Michael McGurk, Bannockburn's James Thomson and pro debutante William Cook make up the rest of a high quality card.
