Scotland's men and women both had extra-end wins at the World Junior Curling Championships in Ostersund, Sweden, yesterday, to keep themselves in contention for places in next weekend's medal games, writes Mike Haggerty.

The men, led by Perth's Kyle Smith defeated Italy 6-5. The skip had the chance to score the two points needed for victory in the 10th end, but his final draw was too strong. The Scots scored just one and the teams went into an extra end. When Italy couldn't completely remove a Scottish counter, Smith's men stole the single shot to secure the win.

In the evening game, Scotland took hosts Sweden to an extra end but went down 4-3 when Smith was long with his final draw.

Hannah Fleming's women's team recovered from a game-turning loss of four shots in the seventh end to overcome Sweden 8-7.

They started their recovery in the eighth end but only scored one after an umpire's measure, they then stole a single in the tenth to level the score. They next forced the Swedes into a tap-back attempt with their last stone of the extra end which carried too far.

It was the Scots' second win from three starts. "Although we were down, we still had a chance to win it," said Fleming. "We know not to give up."

The Scottish women play winless USA next.
