FIVE Scots have been named in the 30-strong Great Britain cycling team for the UEC Under-23 and Junior European Track Championships in Athens, Greece, from July 14-19.
Reigning double elite European champion Katie Archibald from Milngavie, who took two gold medals in Guadeloupe last October, and British national points race champion Mark Stewart from Dundee will contest the under-23 endurance events.
Also taking to the boards will be Glasgow-based riders Jonathan Mitchell and John Paul in the under-23 men's sprint line-up with 18-year-old Jack Carlin from Paisley in the junior men's sprint team.
The Great Britain cycling team won two gold, four silver and four bronze medals at last year's event.
Gary Coltman, Scottish Cycling head of performance, said: "I am delighted that five Scots have been selected for the UEC Under-23 and Junior European Track Championships later this month.
"It really shows that Scotland can continue to produce exciting talented athletes, and our programmes are working hard to develop our young riders to the level of making selection for Great Britain at major championship events.
"This is a very encouraging position to be in as we look ahead to Rio, the Gold Coast and onto Tokyo 2020."
Shane Sutton, British Cycling technical director, said: "This is the largest team we've fielded at an Under-23 and Junior European Championships for a long time, and that's indicative of the hard work we've been doing on the performance pathway to ensure that talented young riders are identified and developed.
"The chance to compete at these championships is an opportunity to be cherished. The young athletes selected could represent the future of the Great Britain Cycling Team so I'm looking forward to seeing what results we can get and where they stand in relation to the rest of Europe at this stage of their careers.
"We've also selected some non-programme riders for this event which demonstrates our commitment to constantly be on the lookout for new talent as we look beyond Rio and onto Tokyo 2020."

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
