Eilidh Child falls just short of Diamond League win

There are optimistic indications that Eilidh Child is edging towards her best form as the Commonwealth Games near but the Scot came up just short in Oslo last night as a first-ever Diamond League win proved elusive, writes Mark Woods.

Third for the third time this year in the 400 metres hurdles, the 26-year-old looked poised for greater returns at the Bislett Games in Oslo but could not quite maintain her pursuit.

Fading down the stretch to finish in 55.33secs, she saw Jamaica's Kaliese Spencer pip Bahrain's Kemi Adekoya to win. "I came round the bend and it was so windy, I don't know what happened," Child said. "I'm glad I was competitive in the race but it was a little bit messy. I kind of hope it's windy in Glasgow because that will give me an advantage."

Chris O'Hare's bid to emulate the likes of Seb Coe and Steve Ovett in the historic Dream Mile ended when the 23-year-old from Edinburgh dropped out with almost two laps left.

It was a disappointing setback for O'Hare, who will compete in next month's Sainsbury's Grand Prix at Hampden to ready himself for the Commonwealths. "People are asking me if I'm going to medal," he said. "It's difficult. You're only missing the US guys from the world scene in the 1500. But for a championship, you've got to go in with the mentality that you can do something special."

Guy Learmonth was fifth in the 800m in 1:47.50, while Jessica Judd (1.59.77) overtook Lynsey Sharp in the rankings.
