GARY CORNISH, the undefeated heavyweight from Inverness, faces a possible defining moment in his career this evening in his quest to make history by becoming the first Scot to be crowned British heavyweight champion.
Cornish, who has a perfect 19-0 record, will face Croatian Marino Goles, 34, at Paisley's Lagoon Leisure Centre on a Saltire Promotions bill also featuring Jordan McCorry of Cambuslang against Glenrothes-based Latvian Andrejs Podusovs, for the British Masters lightweight title.
Although there are no titles at stake in the main contest, the 27-year-old Highlander's manager, Tommy Gilmour stressed: "There is no margin for error. Goles has stopped 15 of his 17 opponents and as far as Gary's future prospects are concerned every bout is effectively a championship fight.
"After all the hard work of the past four years he is reaching the stage where he not only has to win every time but he also has to look good doing so.
"Goles is strong and powerful and has lost only twice. He also fancies the job so this is potentially Gary's toughest and most dangerous opponent so far.
"Gary has never fought someone with Goles' knock-out ratio. But if he wins we will discuss our future plans at the start of next week in the knowledge that he's taken a step closer to a British title eliminator."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
