SCOT star Daniel Purvis' three-year reign as British champion came to an end yesterday when he had to settle for silver as Max Whitlock, one of his Great Britain team-mates who won bronze at London 2012, took gold in style.
Whitlock, who took team and pommel horse bronze at the Olympics, finished three clear points ahead of Commonwealth Games hopeful Purvis to claim the title with an all-around score of 90.650.
Purvis scored 14.700 on his high bar routine to finish with 87.250 and leave City of Leeds' Matthew Firth with bronze with a combined total of 83.700 across all six pieces of apparatus.
Scotland star Purvis admitted he was disappointed to lose out on a fourth successive title. He said: "I'm quite happy to come second but it is a little disappointing losing the title. Hopefully I will be chosen to do the all-round competition in April at the European championships."
Sam Oldham, who helped to win Great Britain's first men's Olympic team medal in a century alongside Whitlock and Purvis, had a poor day by his own standards to finish in fourth.
Kristian Thomas and Louis Smith, the other two members of the Olympic men's team, didn't compete – Thomas was injured in last weekend's French World Cup event and Smith is taking a break from the sport.
Scotland's Daniel Keatings, who missed out on a place in the five-man Olympic squad, posted the highest pommel horse score of the day with 15.800, beating Whitlock by 0.100 of a mark.
And Keatings admitted he was delighted with his performance.
"I chose to just to do the three pieces of apparatus to give my legs a rest as I have suffered a few injuries," he said. "But I will be back doing all six pieces by the end of the year and I will do all six at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow."
Meanwhile, in the women's competition, Gabrielle Jupp was crowned all-around champion in her first major senior event.
The 15-year-old scored 56.150 to take the crown from Olympian Rebecca Tunney, who was unable to defend her title due to injury.
Lisa Mason, who at 31 returned to competitive gymnastics after a 13-year absence, made today's vault final after scoring 13.425 on the apparatus.
Mason, who represented Great Britain at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, is now targeting qualification for Glasgow 2014.
