Hawkeyethenoo looking to finally break home hoodoo in Gold Cup

IT'S a long time since a home trainer landed Scotland's feature Flat race, an awful lot longer that the 70 or so seconds it normally takes the winner from start to finish, but that depressing statistic could all change after this afternoon's £120,000 William Hill Ayr Gold Cup.

A gallon of petrol cost 55p and Jaws was scaring the living daylights out of cinema-goers when giant chestnut Roman Warrior emerged from his stable within sight of the winning post to secure a famous local win for the late Nigel Angus that memorable Friday back in 1975. A lot has been altered since that heady strike not least that Europe's richest sprint handicap is now staged 24 hours later and it is now – fittingly in the year of the London Olympics – the centre-piece of an eight-race card also boasting a Silver and Bronze Cup which is sure to enthral the massive crowd.
