LAURA MUIR laid down a marker for the new season last night with second place over 3000m at the Hengelo Meeting in the Netherlands, writes Mark Woods.

The Scottish prospect, 21, leapfrogged Paula Radcliffe into third on the all-time UK Under-23 rankings with a run of 8:38.49 in finishing narrowly behind Kenya's Irene Jelagat, who delivered the quickest time in the world this year.

Elsewhere in Hengelo, Dina Asher-Smith broke the British 100m record by running 11.02 seconds in coming second to Dutch rival Dafne Schippers.

The world junior champion, 19, beat Montell Douglas' 2008 mark of 11.05 - with Asha Philip, who was third in 11.10, snatching third spot in the UK's all-time rankings.

"At first I wasn't thinking it was all that good," Asher-Smith said. "I was looking at Dafne's time and thinking: 'that was amazing'. But then my time flashed up and I couldn't believe it.

"I'm not really going to celebrate it. It wasn't a perfect race. My coach and I look at all the elements in my race and that wasn't 100% worthy of a celebration."

Elsewhere, Chris Bennett threw 74.42m to push fellow Scot Mark Dry into second place in the hammer at the Hammerwurf meeting in Germany. While Andy Butchart warmed up for his GB&NI track debut with sixth place over 5000m at the Flanders Cup in a personal best of 13:33.04.
