Hockey: Jamieson gives Menzieshill edge over rivals Western

Grove Menzieshill drew first blood against Milne Craig Western with a 1-0 victory in the Aberdeen Asset Management national league, but the meeting of the women's game's powerhouses was a rather drab affair.

The only goal came in 27 minutes when the Western defence failed to clear and Sarah Jamieson scored from three yards out.

Both sides had been in scoring form the previous day, Grove thrashing Giffnock 10-0 – Ailsa Wyllie notched a hat trick and there were two goals each for Ali Bell and Linda Clement – while Western saw off Inverleith 5-0 at Titwood, with goals from Anna-Mae Morton, Holly Cram, Nicola Pitticas, Catriona Ralph and Susan McGilveray.

Four goals from the Scotland striker Sarah Robertson helped Edinburgh University to a 9-1 win over Wildcats, Nikki Kidd and Lucy Lanigan also scored twice. CALA Edinburgh scored their second win of the season, 1-0 over Glynhill Kelburne, with Emma Watson getting the vital strike.

* A goal two minutes from time by Duncan Riddell gave Grange a hard- earned 5-4 win over high-flying Grove Menzieshill and joint top spot in the men's Aberdeen Asset Management national league.

It was 2-2 at the interval – goals by Cammie Fraser and Matt Connor, after a defensive error, for Grange were cancelled out by strikes from Craig Falconer, from a very narrow angle and Paul Martin for the home side – and twice Grove drew level in the second half, through Gavin Byers and Gavin Tomlinson, with a set-piece strike, after Phil Sully and Fraser Sands, from a penalty corner, had edged Grange in front.

Western Wildcats won the Glasgow derby against PSL Clydesdale 5-1, through a Scott McCartney hat trick and other goals from Gary Maitles and Douglas Simpson, Ciaran Crawford got Clydesdale's consolation. Inverleith headed up the table after beating AMN Hillhead 3-2, their goals came from former Hillhead player Aidan Docherty, Fabian Wolski and Lewis Gibson.
