Holly Newall led Scotland's march into the last 16 at the European Junior Championships at Lubin in Poland.

The 16-year-old from Mauchline scored an impressive victory over Spain's joint ninth seed Isabel Fernandez 21-14 21-13 to book a fourth-round clash tomorrow with Turkey's joint fifth seed Kader Inal.

But Newall wasn't the only Scottish winner on day three of the individual event as both boys' doubles pairs also moved into the last 16.

Joint fifth seeds Alex Dunn (Motherwell) and Adam Hall (Mauchine) were too strong for Czech pair Michal Hubacek and Jan Somerlik in winning 21-9 21-13. They now wait to see who they play next, a German or Slovakian pair.

And 15-year-old twins Matthew and Christopher Grimley joined them there when the Glasgow boys toppled Croatia's Dominik Doko and Filip Jagar 21-13 21-16. In the last 16 they will take on Poland's joint fifth seeds Aleksander Jablonski and Pawel Smilowski.

Sarah Findlay and Eleanor O'Donnell then won their girls' doubles 25-23 21-17 against Poland's Magda Konieczna and Kornelia Marczak to give Scotland four wins from six matches.

O'Donnell had lost her mixed doubles earlier in the day when she and Matthew Grimley went down 21-17 21-13 against Turkey's joint third seeds Melih Turgut and Fatma Nur Yavuz.

Scotland's other setback came in the girls' singles when Edinburgh's Julie MacPherson fell 21-15 16-18 21-18 against Julie Dawall Jacobsen of Denmark after a hard-fought 53-minute battle.

Manager Karen Stalker said: "Holly produced a brilliant display to reach the last 16 and it is brilliant to still have four challengers going strong. But all Scotland's winners today will know that the opposition is now getting tougher and tougher as we reach the later stages of the tournament."
