Nico Hulkenberg has been retained by Force India for the 2015 Formula One season.

The German has been described as a "true racer" and a motivator by Vijay Mallya, the team principal, following the driver's strongest racing season. He returned to the Silverstone-based marque this year after leaving Sauber.

The German was recruited by Force India following their decision not to retain Paul di Resta at the end of the 2013 campaign. The Scot had spent three years with the F1 team but was informed in December that he would be released having struggled to make an impact during the latter part of the season. He is now competing for Mercedes in Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters.

Hulkenberg has been informed that his future is in F1, by contrast, and he acknowledged his satisfaction at agreeing a deal early.

"It's good to confirm my plans for next season," said the 27-year-old. "This is a team I know extremely well and we've enjoyed a great year together with some special results."

Hulkenberg has finished in the points in 13 of the 16 grands prix to date - he has four fifth-place finishes to his credit - having out-scored his team-mate Sergio Perez comfortably. For now there is no confirmation about whether or not the team will also retain Perez, even though the Mexican has consistently stated his desire to remain.

For Hulkenberg, next term will be his fifth competitive campaign in F1 since making his debut with Williams in 2010. Having been dropped by the Grove-based team, Hulkenberg was signed by Force India as test driver for 2011 before being promoted to a race seat for 2012. Surprisingly, Hulkenberg then switched to Sauber for 2013, only to return to Force India ahead of the current season.

"The team has big ambitions and I believe we can have a competitive package next year," he said. "I have a good feeling for 2015, and there is a lot to be excited about as we try to build on our results this year."

Mallya has confirmed holding on to Hulkenberg on this occasion was an easy decision to make. "I am convinced he is one of the best talents on the grid," he added.
