Oh Canada, Sarah Inglis sings in praise of her home from home.

Two years into her adventures on the Pacific Rim, the Scottish prospect remains in thrall to its charms. And she believes the path chosen can lead all the way to the Gold Coast, after revealing plans to prolong her stay across the Atlantic and target athletics' highest stages.

The 23-year-old, who claimed the National 5k title in Edinburgh on Wednesday, will fly out to Colorado today to train under ex-marathon world record holder Steve Jones in a bid to pull out speedy showings on the track this summer. Refreshed from a hiatus back in her native West Lothian, it will be another diversion to savour.

There have been constant leaps forward since opting to follow one-time Scotland coach Laurier Primeau to Trinity Western University near Vancouver in 2013, a radical move which, according to the middle-distance runner's own Twitter account, amounts to 'living the dream'.

"Going to university there has been great for me," she said. "I graduate in November and I think I'll stay on for another indoor season and postpone real life. I have a good group. I know I can get a massage, the physio, use the gym, all the little things. I've just enjoyed it and that's half the battle.

"I study a little but I train full-time apart from a wee part-time job. The lifestyle is great with the mountains and lakes. There's also much less alcohol. It's clean living. But that suits me."

Working under Jones - who is already mentoring fellow Scots Freya Ross and Susan Partridge - will accelerate her progress, she hopes, ahead of a tilt on the North American circuit which starts next month. "I'm going out to Boulder for five weeks training," she confirms. "I've never been at altitude so I want to try it before I race."

If it pays off, it could be the default option. Currently aiming to become a teacher, Inglis will apply for a work visa to remain in Canada in the run-in to next Commonwealth Games when she will be in her prime. Finances and results permitting, a career break might take precedence to throw everything into athletics accomplishment.

"That would be at the dream, to go full-time and really go for 2018," she adds. "I'll keep trying as long as I keep enjoying it."
