SCOTLAND has claimed a clutch of medals at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships which are being held this week in Largs, including golds for Jamie Fitzgerald and Georgina Usher.

In the men's individual foil event, Jamie Fitzgerald saw off compatriot Keith Cook in the elimination tableau last eight to make the final four, where he defeated England's Husayn Rosowsky 11-10.

In the final, Fitzgerald comfortably took care of Zhang Zhenggang, from Singapore, 15-2.

Competing in the women's individual epee, 10-time British champion Usher - who had claimed four Commonwealth medals previously - defeated both Australia's Joanna Halls and Mary Cohen of England to set up a final bout with Jamaica's Tia Simms-Lynn, which she won 11-4.

Jennifer Sancroft had got the ball rolling for the hosts with bronze in the women's individual sabre on Monday.

Her husband, Glenn Sancroft, followed suit on Tuesday, sharing the bronze medal position with Scottish team-mate Stephen Rocks in the men's individual sabre.

"I'm thrilled to have proven my potential," said Jennifer Sancroft. "I'm even more thrilled that my husband has also won his first individual Commonwealth medal. We're now looking forward to the team event where I think we should start as top seeds. The goal will definitely be to aim for another medal for us and our team-mates."

There was silver for Chloe Dickson in the women's individual foil after a loss to Wang Wenying, of Singapore.

Today marks the first day of the team competitions, with the men's epee and women's sabre events set to get under way later this morning.

Women's foil and men's sabre take place tomorrow and men's foil and women's epee on Saturday.
