Justin Gatlin has failed to make the three-man shortlist for the IAAF World Athletes of the Year award.

The two-time former drug cheat's inclusion as one of 10 contenders for the global award provoked outrage, with fellow nominee Robert Harting, the German discus thrower, asking to be removed from contention in protest.

IAAF vice-president Lord Sebastian Coe had also questioned the 32-year-old sprinter's nomination.

The American is now out of the running for the men's award, though, after Qatari high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim, Kenya's marathon world record holder Dennis Kipruto Kimetto and French pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie were voted as the final three.
