Lanarkshire South’s defence of title on track

Defending champions Lanarkshire South safely made it through the qualifiers of the Scottish Cities & Counties Championships with a round to spare.

The only team remaining in the competition with a 100% record, the South Section table-toppers will take one of the two places on offer to each of the four sections for a place in the knockout stages next month, thanks to a 127-104 win ahead of Dumfries, while the other berth is still up for grabs.

Despite losing their unbeaten record 124-119 to West Lothian, East Lothian have qualified along with West Fife in the East Section. The Fifers saw off Stirling East 120-106 and that win sees them tied on 10 points with East Lothian, but in pole position by 36 shots with rivals West Lothian four points behind.Thanks to a 112-104 win for Bon Accord against Dundee, coupled with a 126-114 defeat for Aberdeen & Kincardine against Buchan, Bon Accord are the new leaders in the North Section, two points clear of rivals A & K and Buchan going into Saturday’s defining round.In the West Section, high- fliers Ayrshire North suffered a 120-113 defeat from Dumbarton West but still remain in pole position for making the cut. However, with six teams battling for just two places, competition is fierce with only Argyll & Bute and Glasgow West out of the equation.Scotland’s women bowlers are assured of medals in the British Isles Championship finals today, but the colour has yet to be determined.Yesterday in the championships at Llandrindod Wells, the Scots, who are the reigning national champions from Northfield last year, won through in the singles and pairs but lost out in the triples and fours.Caroline Brown, from Bellshill & Mossend, was the first to note her intentions in the singles, winning 21-18 against Ireland’s Marie McCord. In the pairs, Sandra Wilcox and Ann Leiper, from the Longside club in Peterhead, dominated in the second half of their match against Ireland’s Valerie Wilson and Ida Eldon and ran out 23-10 winners.Five shots dropped in the 10th end were instrumental in a 17-8 defeat for JG Fleming trio Jennifer Yule, Isabel Gilchrist and Rosemary Speirs in the triples against Alice Tunney’s Irish threesome and in the fours Vivien Taylor, Moira Cronie, Kath Stevenson and Trish Henderson, from Castle Kennedy, led Brenda Atherton’s England rink 9-4 after eight ends, but lost 22-14 despite a late flourish.In today’s finals, Brown’s opponent in the singles will be 2006 title-holder Karina Bisson from Jersey. She dominated in her 21-8 semi-final against Commonwealth singles champion Natalie Melmore and in the pairs, the Scots will fight for the title against either Wales and England.
