n Charles Van Commenee, the head coach of UK Athletics, has warned Olympic hopefuls that they will miss out on the Games if they do not perform at next month's Aviva Trials in Birmingham, writes Mark Woods. The Dutchman believes the June 22-24 meeting will be the most competitive domestic championships in 20 years, with places up for grabs at London 2012. Only the top two in each event will be guaranteed selection, as long as they have achieved the A qualification standard; Lee McConnell is the only Scot to have achieved the standard.

With such an incentive to excel, Van Commenee expects a ferocious battle for Olympic places. He said: "There is a depth in the sport that we have not seen for 20 years and we have a number of events where five or six athletes are competing for three places. It doesn't take a genius to work out the maths and athletes will need to be at the very top of their game at the Olympic Trials if they want to make the team for London 2012."

Eilish McColgan will run her first 3000 metres steeplechase in nine months tomorrow in Belgium and is one of several hopefuls aiming to ease the pressure by getting the qualifying mark ahead of the trials.

GB open today against Malaysia, the only side not going to the London Games, before taking on India, Argentina, New Zealand, South Korea and Pakistan. Argentina and Pakistan are both in GB's pool at the Games.

Lee has a squad featuring two changes to thaat which claimed third place in the recent pre-Olympic Test Event: captain Barry Middleton returns as does Surbiton striker Matt Daly who has been out for six months with a knee injury, but there is no place for Niall Stot, the sole Scot in contention for a place in the squad of 16 players and two travelling reserves. GB beat New Zealand 4-1 to take bronze last year but they are top seeds this time around.
