HOPES of an immediate re-match between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao have been dashed after it was revealed that the Filipino is to undergo surgery on his right shoulder this week, a procedure which will put him out for anything between 6 to 12 months.

The 36-year-old will go under the knife to correct a torn rotator cuff, a problem which, according to promoter Bob Arum, he suffered in sparring on April 4, and hampered him during Saturday night's richest fight in history at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mayweather, who won a unanimous decision in the four-belt unification bout to improve his record to 48-0, will return to the ring in September, for a contest which may prove his last before retiring.

"Manny and [his wife] Jinkee decided that in the best interests of his long-term health, he will have the surgery here this week," Pacquiao's manager Michael Koncz said. "Following surgery, we will have a fuller assessment of the situation, and doctors will follow with an announcement on Manny's prognosis." Mayweather defeated Pacquiao in their long-awaited bout by scores of 118-110, 116-112, 116-112.
