Stockport's Roberto Pavoni clinched a third title and was able to look forward with confidence to this summer's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after yesterday's British Gas Championships at the Tollcross International Centre.
In the final session, the 23-year-old English swimmer won the 200m individual medley in 1:59.08 and added the gold medal to his earlier wins in the 400m medley and 200m butterfly. "I'm ecstatic to win all three," said Pavoni. "My main goal this week was to make a Commonwealth Games time and the other was to win as many titles as possible. I only made the Games qualifying time in the 400m medley but I'm hoping I get to swim all three events this summer.
"I swam here at Tollcross in the Duel in the Pool in December and it's a big advantage to come back again and get another chance to sample the atmosphere. It means there won't be any surprises come the Commonwealth Games. It won't seem to be a really big occasion."
Richard Schafers, winner of the Scottish Championship last week, claimed a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle. Hatfield's Adam Brown won in 22.27sec and the Edinburgh University man clocked 22.65sec. "There was a lot of pressure to win and get the Games time last week," said the 23-year-old. "I did that so this week has been much more enjoyable."
Hannah Miley lost out on her final chance of a podium place this week when she finished fourth in the 400m freestyle in 4:11.85. Wales' Jazz Carlin won in 4:04.68.
But it was job done for Miley at last week's Scottish Championships, winning six titles and qualifying for Glasgow 2014 in the 400m and 200m individual medleys and the 800m freestyle. She added another nomination time in the 200m breaststroke at the British Championships last Saturday. The 24-year-old two-time Olympian will be defending the 400m medley at the Commonwealth Games. She didn't swim in her favourite event at the British Championships but is was encouraging that her Scottish title victory was in a superior time to the new British Champion Aimee Willmott. Lauren Quigley (Stockport Metro) set an English record of 27.90 in winning the 50m backstroke dash - she had already won the 200m backstroke.
"I learnt a lot from swimming for Team GB at the World Championships last year and now I'm just looking forward to the rest of the year," said Quigley. While there will be one more Games qualification chance for the Scots at the end of next month, the first round of selections will be named at Tollcross today.
