This was the hard lesson Michael Schumacher learned on his return to Formula One. It read thus: being the winner of a record seven world championships and 91 grands prix counts for nothing.
Announcing his second, and seemingly final, retirement at the Japanese Grand Prix yesterday, the German acknowledged it was time to go when the season ends.
