AFTER qualifying in the pairs, triples and senior fours, Scotland were left empty handed as the men's individual British Isles Championships concluded at Eddlewood in Hamilton yesterday.

Despite a strong performance, Campbelltown duo Jim Anderson and John McLean had to accept second best on the day to England's Craig Carter and Tom Milership 21-14. The Scots hit back from 14-4 down after eleven ends to cut the deficit to 14-11, but the English skip in particular played some killer bowls to turn the game on several occasions and take the title.

In the senior fours, the Upper Cowal rink of Alex Kennedy, Keith Campbell, Dan Whyte and David Beattie coasted through their semi-final game against Jersey 24-7. They got off to a poor start in the final against Ireland, finding themselves 11-0 off the pace after just six ends and despite each team scoring seven ends each over the remainder of the match, Ireland claimed a 23-15 victory.

The Denny trio of Darren Couper, Paul McAteer and Stuart Hogg scored a last end single to win their triples semi final against England 14-13, then in a tough title decider against Ireland, where there was only ever a few shots separating the teams. Over the concluding four ends, Scotland let 12-11, Ireland counted a treble and single with Scotland replying with a double to be 14-15 down playing the last, but once against Ireland beat Scotland to the punch, adding the triples crown 17-14.

In the other title deciders, Wales won the junior singles thanks to an outstanding performance from Jonathan Williams 21-18 against Jersey's Malcolm de Sousa and in the principal blue riband singles Jason Greenslade made it a double, pipping Jersey's John Lowery by the same scoreline.

England upstaged Ireland in the fours with a grandstand finish. Ireland led 18-13 with two ends to play, but England scored a 2 and 4 finish to win 19-18.

The event continues at Eddlewood today with the Men's Home International Series where Scotland open the defence of their title against England this morning followed by Wales this afternoon. They wrap up against Ireland in the concluding game tomorrow.
