Scottish cricket’s hall of fame will be incomplete without Douglas Jardine

Cricket Scotland launched their Hall of Fame at the weekend and the initial list of 12 inductees included few surprises, or at least not for those who have studied the history of the summer game in Caledonia.

It would have been unthinkable to have omitted such stalwart characters as Lesley Balfour-Melville, the fellow whose innings of 73 helped defeat the touring Australians in 1882 and was a sublimely gifted all-rounder -- he also represented his country in rugby and was Scottish champion in tennis, billiards, the long jump and amateur golf -- while there was no questioning the merits of a variety of players, who straddled the divide between Scotland and England, men in the mould of Mike Denness, Brian Hardie, Dougie Brown and Gavin Hamilton.
