Shinty: Newtonmore challenge new league proposals

The opening day of the new season produced few surprises with the intrigue happening off the field after it emerged that Newtonmore had filed a motion to be debated at next month's AGM of the Camanachd Association, challenging the ruling body's intention to reduce the Premiership from 10 to eight teams next season.

Newtonmore want to retain the 10-team Premiership and if the motion is successful, it could lead to the collapse of the proposed new structure which included plans for a second national league.

On the pitch, Newtonmore's new boss, Paul John MacKintosh, watched his side begin the defence of the Orion Premiership with a 3-2 win over Glenurquhart. In an entertaining match, Newtonmore dominated for long spells, but a crazy finale saw their advantage evaporate as Glenurquhart mounted a stirring fightback.

With 11 minutes left, 'More's Fraser MacKintosh struck his second and it appeared to be game over. Lewis MacLennan threw the Glen a lifeline before John MacKenzie struck to restore 'More's two-goal advantage. A Neale Reid goal for the Glen made it a tense final few minutes, but MacKintosh's men held out.
