Speedway: Decision on Monarchs' future put on hold

The future of Edinburgh Monarchs is in doubt but a decision has been put on hold for two weeks while directors consider the options and try to plug their funding gap.

Directors have put funds into the club this season and have now opened the doors for further investment, while John Campbell has confirmed that he is to step down as co-promoter after 29 seasons with the club.

The club has endured its worst season financially and the announcement comes only hours after Monarchs' Premier League rivals Berwick Bandits said that they had not decided if they would run next season as they try to attract a new main sponsor while Glasgow Tigers were recently sold to a Danish-based businessman.

Mike Hunter, Monarchs' spokesman, said: "If there is anyone who wants to be involved in keeping the club alive [let us know]. This might be a major investor, but it doesn't need to be. There has already been an approach from a group of supporters prepared to assist with £500 per head. "If there were enough like-minded fans, then this might be an avenue to allow another season to proceed."All of the directors are involved in trying to keep the club going. It has been [our] worst season financially, with the weather largely to blame, but there were also some disappointing crowds towards the end of the season for meaningful matches on relatively reasonable days."It is felt that the long-term future of the club is at a new venue, preferably Ingliston Showground, but talks which began with Showground officials in June have not reached a conclusion. It would seem that Armadale is the only realistic option for 2013."Hunter added: "Keeping the club going would obviously make the transition to a new venue easier to accomplish. The decision to run or not would have to be transmitted to the sport's governing body by November 16."
