Face to face: Mark Cavendish

MARK Cavendish captured his first Tour de France stage as world champion and the 21st of his career when he pipped Andre Greipel and Matt Goss in a very tight finish to the second stage in Tournai yesterday.

With Team Sky's resources heavily invested in Bradley Wiggins' yellow jersey aspirations, much has been made of Cavendish's lack of support in this year's points classification campaign.

Many had questioned the impact of his newly slimmed down physique on his sprint power, as well as his ability to win stages without a dedicated lead-out train.
