HANNAH Miley was one of five Britons to claim gold on the opening day of the Mare Nostrum meet in Barcelona yesterday.

The 22-year-old triumphed in the women's 400m medley final as well as taking bronze in the 200m breaststroke and finish-ing fourth in the 200m freestyle.

There were silver medals for two other Scots, with David Carry and Michael Jamieson second in the men's 400m freestyle and 100m breaststroke respectively.

Rebecca Adlington got Britain off to a winning start with victory in the 800m freestyle in a world-leading time of 8min 19.86sec, the first sub-8:20sec effort by any swimmer this year. The double Olympic champion over 400m and 800m in Beijing four years ago, Adlington, led from start to finish at what was her last international 800m race before she defends her crown in London.

Second behind Adlington was triple world short-course champion Mireia Belmonte of Spain, who also followed Miley home in the 400m medley. Miley, who leads the world this year with a 4:32.67 effort at Britain's Olympic trials in London in March, clocked 4:34.68 this time, with Belmonte behind in 4:39.06.

In the 200m breaststroke, Miley swam a solid 2:28.41, her best in textile and 0.05sec faster than she swam at the British Olympic trials. She finished behind Spain's Marina Garcia and Kierra Smith of Canada. In the 200m freestyle Miley swam 2:01.22.

Carry was pipped by Sebastien Rouault in the 400m freestyle, the Frenchman finishing in 3:51.64, with the Scot just behind in 3:51.96. Jamieson (1:01.17) was second in a 100m breaststroke final dominated by Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa.

Britain's other golds came from Georgia Davies in the 100m backstroke, Chris Walker-Hebborn in the 200m backstroke and James Goddard in the 200m medley.
