The Derby: pinstickers' guide

ASTROLOGY

Aidan O'Brien/Ryan Moore

Appeared to thrive when stepped up in trip at Chester in the Dee Stakes. Might not have beaten much in the mud that day, but he could not have been more impressive. Plenty from this stable have outrun their odds in recent seasons 6

BONFIRE

Andrew Balding/Jimmy Fortune

Looked special when making a winning debut at Salisbury last year. Confirmed that promise when an unlucky third in a French Group 1 last October. Oozed class in the Dante at York but questions to answer on the temperament front 8

CAMELOT

Aidan O'Brien/Joseph O'Brien

Unbeaten 2000 Guineas winner set to go off the shortest-priced favourite since Entrepreneur in 1997, who finished fourth at odds of 4-6. Not much stamina on the distaff side over much further than nine furlongs, and ability to handle Epsom's undulations is possible bone of contention. Still the class horse of the race 9

CAVALEIRO

Marcus Tregoning/Hayley Turner

Won twice over a mile last year and looked a thorough stayer when third in the Lingfield Derby Trial. Hit the headlines last week when it emerged he would be partnered by Hayley Turner, only the second woman to have a ride in the race. Would perhaps have stronger claims in the St Leger 4

MAIN SEQUENCE

David Lanigan/Ted Durcan

Quickened up in the manner of a top-class horse to preserve unbeaten record in the Lingfield Derby Trial. Appears to be improving with racing and has all of the right attributes. Trainer has only had one other runner in a Classic when Meeznah was touched off in the Oaks. A huge chance 10

MICKDAAM

Richard Fahey/Paul Hanagan

A first Derby runner for the Malton trainer, who booked his place with victory in the Chester Vase. Campaigned by Mike de Kock in Dubai earlier in the season so more experienced the most. A tough campaigner, but might be lacking in the class department 6

MINIMISE RISK

Andrew Balding/Jamie Spencer

Expensive purchase who appeared to be going the right way until he finished last of five behind Mickdaam at Chester. Stable have much stronger claims with Bonfire and hard to see him getting involved 3

RUGGED CROSS

Henry Candy/Dane O'Neill

Ran a promising race against Thought Worthy and Noble Mission at Newmarket, when staying on as if this trip will suit. Used the Breakfast With The Stars morning to familiarise himself with the unique course, but it would a major surprise were he to upset the big guns 5

THOUGHT WORTHY

John Gosden/William Buick

A full-brother to Lucarno, who won the 2007 St Leger after having finished fourth in the Derby. Second to Imperial Monarch on bad ground at Sandown and showed a likeable attitude when beating Frankel's brother Noble Mission at Newmarket. Will run his race, but one or two likely to have more speed 7

VERDICT

Camelot is set to go off the shortest-priced favourite for years and has looked the real deal in his three races. He came from an unpromising position to win the Guineas and has been trained as a Derby horse. Yet despite being by Montjeu, there is just a slight stamina doubt. Bonfire has the class to get involved, but he looked highly strung at York.

MAIN SEQUENCE, however, looks more straightforward. He quickened up impressively to win his trial at Lingfield and

was going away from a smart sort at the line. He looks a value alternative to the favourite, who can chase him home.
