The wheels come off for Cavendish

Marc De Maar won the fifth stage of the Tour of Britain yesterday as Leigh Howard regained his overall lead from Mark Cavendish after coming in fifth.

De Maar made a break for the front with six kilometres of the 146.9km Stoke-on-Trent stage left, making the move only four kilometres after a crash.

He raced to the finish alone, with Sep Vanmarcke winning a sprint finish for second place some 15 seconds behind. Cavendish fell away from the leading pack in the hills, and relinquished his overall lead. Former race leader Boy van Poppel came in third to close the gap on Howard in the overall standings. Cavendish is now in 35th.
