Jax Thoirs, the Scottish pole vault record holder, last night became the latest athlete to pull out of the European Championships after he suffered an ankle injury while training in Glasgow.

The 21-year-old was expected to make his senior Great Britain debut at the event next week, having finished fourth at the Commonwealth Games. "I'm gutted," he said. "The timing is really annoying."

Jake Wightman knows the feeling. The European junior champion has been forced to pull out of the 1500 metres race due to the hamstring injury sustained in the build-up to the Commonwealth Games.

He could sit out the rest of the season but has received support from Edinburgh club-mate Chris O'Hare. "He was a bit upset with his performance at the Commonwealths," said the Scot. "I've tried to remind him he's got a long career ahead of him. He has to remember how much this hurts and try to channel it."
