Guy Learmonth was disappointed to exit the World Athletics Championships at the semi-final stage, but last week’s personal best 1 min 45.1 run in Italy, the second fastest 800m ever by a Scot, has offered him a huge end of season boost.

“My target for the years was 1:44.5 believe it or not, so I fell short a wee bit, but at the same time I had the greatest season I’ve ever had and I’m not too fussed about that. It just means that next season I know I can get close to that 1:43 barrier. I genuinely believe I can do that.”
